Mars

During the mid-20th century the US and the Soviet Union both strived to reach the moon. In the 21st century, it is NASA and the US with support from the world who are now dreaming of reaching that distant desolate neighboring planet Mars. To date, there have already been two unmanned missions to Mars, and there will be two more to follow, all of which are funded by NASA. The first Mars rover worked for many weeks before having an error in sending data collected about the surface. The lander to follow that one was a total failure, never reaching the Martian surface because of a miscalculation. The Mars Surveyor is set to be launched in May 2003, to conduct similar but more in depth studies of the surface and what it is made up of. Later in 2003, the Mars Express will orbit Mars in an attempt to work with the lander to locate water and other minerals or chemicals below the surface. All of these missions have and will further our chances of men reaching Mars as the probes in the 1950’s and early 1960’s aided us in landing on the moon.
